My Story

MIJAN – Singer • Actress • Model • Survivor

Mijan, a native of Brooklyn, New York, began singing in church choirs at the age of six. A self-taught talent in Gospel and Spiritual music, she quickly developed a sound that blends soul, strength, and deep emotion. Classically educated in voice and musicianship, Mijan was also trained in acting at Pin Point Theatre in Washington, D.C. and began her entertainment journey as a dancer, trained in contemporary and jazz by famed choreographer Bobby Tucker.

Her promising recording voice was first discovered by Arnaud Allure of Allure Records, releasing her debut single “Slave to Love.” The song became a favorite hit within the gay community, earning Mijan strong recognition for her powerful vocals and uplifting energy. In 1994, she was introduced to 95 North Records, where she co-wrote and helped create her first groundbreaking hit, “Alright.” This record not only became a major success in Europe and later in the United States, but also founded and defined the Gospel House Dance Music genre, marking a historic moment in dance and spiritual music.

Through the early 2000s, Mijan scored a string of successful releases with Morehouse Records, Smack Records, Equal Records, Jayti Vanelli, and the Jellybean label. She has shared the stage with industry legends including Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Martha Wash, and Bootsy Collins. Her powerful performances earned her recognition as one of the Top 100 Artists in Dance-House Music.

Her artistry has also shined on screen—appearing on television shows such as “Living Single,” “413 Hope Street,” and “The Baller” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, as well as in the music video “Oops Upside Your Head” with Snoop Dogg, and in the feature film “Malcolm X.” She also showcased her stage acting in “1001 Black Inventions.”

Mijan’s music career has flourished internationally, performing throughout Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. She has worked with legendary Motown A&R Mickey Stevenson (writer of “Dancing in the Street”), and appeared on a special recording tribute for Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. Her songs have charted on Traxsource and Billboard in both the U.S. and Italy—placing her alongside artists such as Madonna, Mary J. Blige, the Spice Girls, and Daft Punk.

Mijan’s musical connection with the Agape International Spiritual Center and Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith is legendary, as she continues to be a recurring musical presence at their services. She performs at some of New Jersey’s biggest festival venues and continues to inspire audiences with her commanding voice and soulful authenticity.

In addition to her entertainment career, Mijan is a survivor of the foster care system, using her life story as a message of resilience, faith, and transformation. Her journey from adversity to artistry serves as an inspiration to many who seek healing and empowerment through creativity.

Currently, this powerhouse diva has released her single “Lift Me Up” across the U.S. and Europe, while expanding her work in film productions and new musical releases. Her music is available on all streaming platforms and Traxsource.com.
